This block of buildings, known as the Vannear/Marker Block and stretching from the south corner to the south east corner of the Diamond, suffered a total loss in a devastating fire on December 3, 1896. The only fire protection was a bucket brigade. Buildings lost included the Noah Marker home, the N. M. Marker & Son General Store, Weller Hardware, and eight other businesses.
