In the late 1800s, the group of buildings located on the southeast corner of the Diamond was owned by Charles S. Vannear. Merchants included C. M. Clifford & Son, Groft & Fowler Hardware and Tin Shop, and W. W. Murdock, Jeweler. In 1903, George Deeds purchased this block which housed his insurance company as well as Brown’s Grocery Store and J. F. McKelvey, Saddler. Both blocks suffered damage in the 1896 and 1929 fires.
